Brief history of Mother’s Day

Fry’s idea was initially met with skepticism, but after lobbying from the women’s suffrage movement and the National Woman’s Party, President Rutherford B. Hayes proclaimed May 14 as Mother’s Day in 1880. Although originally celebrated mainly in the United States, Mother’s Day has spread to many other countries and now has a global reach. In 1971, Congress officially designated Mother’s Day a national holiday.

Although it originally commemorated only American mothers, today Mother’s Day is a universal holiday that celebrates mothers of all kinds – biological, adoptive, stepmothers, foster parents, and yes, single mothers, as well.
