He then played for clubs in the Calicut zone, Kerala, and finally for clubs in the Bangalore zone of the National Football League before getting selected to play for the Indian national team. Vijayan’s footballing skills soon caught the eye of scouts from clubs in Europe, and he eventually signed for the Spanish club CD Alaves in 1992. After two years in Spain, he returned to India to play for Mohun Bagan in Kolkata. He then moved to Saudi Arabia in 1996 to play for Al-Ittihad, Jeddah. In 1998, he moved back to India to play for Jamshedpur FC in the newly formed National Football League, before moving to Churchill Brothers in Margao, Goa, in 1999.
