Pre-travel clearance is a great way to feel more confident; about your destination as well as take as much pressure as possible out of the traveling process. It also gives you peace of mind by being sure that all vaccines and medications are up to date. This information can be given to the TSA officer; at the airport so they know what is expected for their security checks.

How does a candidate qualify for pre-travel clearance?

A candidate may qualify for pre-travel clearance; if they have no known active infections and no medical conditions that would result in a significant risk to public health.

What is the timeframe for submitting a PTR application?

You should submit a PTR application to the CDC at least 1 month before your departure date. Once you have submitted the application; it takes 1-2 weeks to process and for the CDC to create a clearance letter.

Is there a fee to obtain a PTR clearance?

You can get a PTR clearance for free. You will need to submit an application with the necessary information; but the fee is waived if you are not requesting a background check.

What background checks are required for a PTR clearance?

There are two types of PTR clearances, one that is obtained through DHS and the other through the FBI. The DHS clearance is for people who possess a US passport; while the FBI clearance is for people who don’t possess a US passport or who have never traveled outside of the country.

When will I find out whether or not I have been approved for the PTR process?

The TSA will provide a one-time approval for those who have been submitted for PTR; but you will not be notified by the TSA if your application is approved. Instead, you will need to log into your PTR account and check to see if your application has been approved.

What if I am denied pre-travel clearance?

Alternative options

The TSA Pre-Check Program is a voluntary program for frequent travelers. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can enroll online and get a five-year pre-approval letter. You then skip the regular security line and go through a shorter, well-managed lane. The TSA says that a recent survey of participants found that they ranked the experience as more efficient and less intrusive than going through the regular security line.
