Ghulam Nabi Azad, a senior leader and former J&K chief minister, resigned from all positions including primary membership of the Congress party on Friday, dealing a major setback to the party. Azad had recently resigned from the post of president of Jammu and Kashmir State Congress Committee.

Ghulam Nabi resigned from the post of President of the Jammu and Kashmir State Congress Committee. Party insiders claimed that Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned due to to dissatisfaction with his appointment as J&K PCC chief, though congress sources said it was for health reasons.

Azad is a Congress veteran from Jammu and Kashmir, who has worked for the party for several decades. A regional party from Bihar offered him a berth in the Rajya Sabha. However, he turned down the offer saying that his last time will be spent under the Congress flag.

Azad’s resignation is important because it comes days after Anand Sharma, a Congress veteran, resigned from a key party position offered to him in the poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. Sharma cited “exclusions and insults” as his reason for resigning.
