How to become a QA engineer
After you’ve identified the industry and position you’re interested in, it’s important to fully research what that position entails. This can be done by asking questions from people already in the field, reading on the topic so that you have a basic understanding of what goes into your position, or doing some online research. After you’ve researched your industry and position, make sure to apply for jobs in multiple places until you find one that suits your needs.
10 steps to become a QA Engineer
- Become acquainted with the QA process. What does a QA engineer do? What are the various stages of testing? Why is testing important? How can you become better at testing?
- Learn about software testing tools and methods. Which tools are best for which type of testing? What are some common software testing methods? Which software testing tools are available free and which ones require payment?
- Get experience in test management. How do you plan and execute tests? How do you monitor and report on tests? How do you handle revisions to tests?
- Develop your QA skills. What kinds of problems does a QA engineer typically encounter? How can you find and fix defects in software products?
- Earn certification in software testing or another related field. What types of certification exams are available for software testers? Which certification programs offer the best training and job prospects?
- network with other software testers and engineers. Where can you find information about upcoming software testing conferences and workshops? Who are some good resources for learning more about software testing techniques?
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends affecting software testing. What new techniques are being used to detect defects in software products? Which methodologies are being adopted by leading companies? How are testing processes changing in response to advances in technology and market demands? What about new educational programs, such as undergraduate degrees or online programs for software testers? What is the future of software testing?
- Network with other software testers from around the world. Interact with peers, share news and information, present your professional accomplishments, and learn from others.
- Find a mentor or coach who can help you become a better software tester. Working alongside an experienced expert will help you learn the skills you need to succeed in your career.
- Become involved with the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB). The ISTQB accredits training programs and provides an internationally recognized qualification to software testers from around the world.
What qualifications do I need to become a QA engineer?
There isn’t one clear answer to this question as the role of QA engineer can vary greatly depending on the company or organization you work for. However, in general, most companies looking to hire a QA engineer will look for someone with at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Additionally, many QA engineers also have experience working with software testing tools and software development methodologies.
If you don’t have any specific qualifications in mind, it’s important to take into account the skills and experience that are common among QA engineers. Some of the most important skills you’ll need include problem solving skills, patience, attention to detail, and communication skills. Additionally, QA engineers typically need experience working with software development tools and programming languages.
For example, QA engineers typically need experience with:
JavaScript and HTML5 testing JavaScript unit testing and/or functional testing
Visual Studio .NET/Mono scripting Debugging tools and utilities  C# programming languages
C++ programming languages (e.g. C++)
Some QA engineers also work on large software projects like high-traffic websites or big-data applications. If you’re interested in a job like this, you should consider taking courses in web development and software programming from an accredited college or university.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings for QA engineers will grow at about as fast as average for all jobs through 2018. However, QA engineer salaries tend to be a bit lower than other engineering positions.
According to the BLS, salaries for QA engineers range from $54,300 to $86,200 per year; this range is considerably higher than average for engineering concerned with software development and web development.
According to a 2011 report from Global Knowledge, “Quality assurance engineers are responsible for testing products and services at every phase of their development lifecycle to ensure that they meet or exceed customer expectations.”

How long does it take to become a qa engineer?
Becoming a QA Engineer can take anywhere from 2-4 years of dedicated study. However, the most important factor in determining how long it will take you to become a QA Engineer is your own motivation and drive. There are many steps you need to take in order to become a QA Engineer, but the overall process is very rewarding.
If you want to become a QA engineer, there are some things you need to do. First, start by becoming aware of what QA is and what it entails. Next, start learning the basics of software testing. Finally, get experience working in the field by taking part in quality assurance projects. If you do all of these things, you will be well on your way to becoming a QA engineer.
