India’s Onion Exports Reach USD 523.8 Million From April To December 2022.

According to recent reports, India exported onions worth a staggering USD 523.8 million from April to December 2022. Despite concerns about domestic supply and prices, the government has not imposed any restrictions on onion exports. The existing export policy for onions remains “Free,” with only the export of onion seeds restricted and permitted only with authorization from the DGFT.

In fact, the DGFT amended the export policy for onions in December 2020, allowing the export of all onion varieties in cut, sliced, or broken powder form, as well as Bangalore Rose onions and Krishnapuram onions, which were previously prohibited.

This significant export of onions is good news for the country’s farmers and the economy as a whole. India is one of the world’s largest producers of onions, and the export of this staple vegetable contributes to foreign exchange earnings and helps farmers earn a better income.

However, there have been concerns about the impact of onion exports on domestic prices and supply. In the past, the government has imposed export restrictions to ensure adequate supply and reasonable prices for consumers. The decision to allow free onion exports this time around reflects the government’s confidence in the country’s onion production and supply capabilities.

Despite this, it is essential to monitor the domestic market for any fluctuations in onion prices and supply. The government must also ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their products and have access to necessary inputs and technology to enhance onion production.
