Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a premier CPSE under the Ministry of Coal, has embraced drone technology in its coal mines through the launch of a web-based portal named VIHANGAM.
The portal enables authorized individuals to access real-time drone footage from the mines through a dedicated 40 Mbps internet connection. The drone technology is being utilized for environmental monitoring, volume measurement, and digitalization of the mining process through photogrammetric mapping.
In addition to incorporating cutting-edge technology to boost coal production, MCL has also increased its focus on enhancing safety standards. The company recently introduced a Robotic Nozzle Water Sprayer in its coal stockyard to carry out dangerous and challenging tasks such as firefighting and dust suppression. The equipment can spray water up to 70 meters in the form of mist and is installed on a 28-kiloliter water tanker.
Mahanadi Coalfields operates in the Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, and Angul districts of Odisha, and is responsible for over 20% of India’s total coal production. The introduction of drone technology and advanced equipment is a testament to MCL’s commitment to innovation and safety in the coal mining industry.
