MYAS Raises Boarding & Lodging Ceiling for Indian Athletes in International Competitions by 66%.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has recently announced a significant revision in the upper ceiling amount for boarding and lodging expenses of Indian athletes and team officials participating in international competitions. The revision, which amounts to a 66% increase, falls under the Ministry’s Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs). This move aims to ensure that athletes and support staff receive adequate provisions when representing India in foreign exposures.

Revised Norms for International Competitions

Under the revised norms, athletes and support staff traveling for approved competitions abroad will now be entitled to a daily allowance of USD 250, marking a significant increase from the previous ceiling of USD 150 per day. This revision comes in response to requests from NSFs, who highlighted that the rates for boarding and lodging set by the Local Organizing Committees (LOC) of these competitions surpass the existing limit of USD 150.

Addressing the Long Overdue Revision

The previous boarding and lodging norms were established in November 2015 and had not been revised for eight years. With the increasing costs of accommodations and the demands placed on athletes during international competitions, it became necessary to reevaluate the existing limits. This revision will empower NSFs to arrange for better accommodations for athletes, ensuring their comfort and well-being while representing the nation at various international events.

Improved Facilities for Indian Athletes

In recent times, Local Organizing Committees (LOC) of international competitions have begun providing inclusive hospitality packages to teams participating in the events. These packages not only cover boarding and lodging but also include local transportation, entry fees, and other amenities. The total cost of such packages often exceeds USD 150 per person per day, necessitating a review of the boarding and lodging norms set in 2015.

Ensuring Athletes’ Comfort and Representation

By increasing the ceiling for boarding and lodging expenses, MYAS aims to support NSFs in providing better facilities to athletes during their international ventures. The revision takes into account the rising costs of accommodations and acknowledges the evolving nature of international competitions. With improved provisions, Indian athletes can focus on their performance and proudly represent the country on the global stage.
