Om Prakash Kohli was born on 9 August 1935, in a small village in Delhi, India. His father was a farmer, and Kohli was the eldest of six siblings. After completing his primary education, Kohli went to Lahore to pursue his higher education. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Science from Forman Christian College, Lahore.
Kohli was an excellent student, and he was very interested in politics from a young age. He was a member of the All India Students Federation and actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle. Kohli completed his Master’s degree in Political Science from Punjab University in 1947.
Political Career
After completing his education, Om Prakash Kohli plunged into active politics. He joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1952 and became a member of the party’s national council. In 1967, he was elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly and later became the leader of the opposition.
Kohli served as the president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh’s Delhi unit from 1971 to 1977. He was also a member of the party’s national executive and central working committee. After the Bharatiya Jana Sangh was merged with other parties to form the Janata Party, Kohli was appointed as the president of the Delhi unit.
Kohli’s political career reached new heights when he was appointed as the Governor of Gujarat in 2014. He served as the Governor of Gujarat until 2019 and was known for his commitment to the development of the state.
