Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shri RK Singh has called upon the G20 member countries to work together in addressing the challenges of global warming and climate change. During his keynote address at the first Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meeting in Bengaluru, the Minister stated that India is committed to reducing its emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 from its 2005 levels.

The country also aims to have almost 50% of its installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. India was ranked among the top five performing countries in the Climate Change Performance Index, with per capita greenhouse gas emissions lower than the world average of 6.3 tCO2e in 2020.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal & Mines Shri Prahlad Joshi stressed the need for international collaboration to achieve universal access to clean energy. He emphasized India’s commitment to a nature-friendly lifestyle and practices, such as reducing, reusing, and recycling. Shri Prahlad Joshi also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mission Life, which aims to promote a mindful and deliberate utilization of resources instead of mindless and destructive consumption.

The first ETWG Meeting will focus on six major priority areas, including energy transition through technology, low-cost financing for energy transition, energy security and diversified supply chains, energy efficiency, industrial low-carbon transitions, fuels for the future, and universal access to clean energy.

More than 150 participants, including G20 countries and special invitee guests, are participating in the three-day event along with international organizations like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

A high-level international seminar on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) was also organized on the sidelines, highlighting the importance of carbon capture, utilization, and storage for achieving net-zero targets.
