Sakshi Malik opens up on importance of education in athlete’s life, saying she told her parents she wanted to quit studies.

“I wish I had a mentor when I was struggling,” Sakshi says. She spoke on the importance of mentors in sports at a webinar organised by Inspire Institute of Sports.

Sakshi Malik, an Olympic bronze medalist, has had a rough time in the last few years as medals have dried up in international events. She failed to beat the state-level wrestlers at one point, which dented her confidence levels. Although Sakshi had the backing of her coaches and parents, her mental health had taken a bad hit and she was on the verge of quitting the sport altogether. She was given a new lease of life when she won the trials and qualified for Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sakshi won the gold medal in the 62 kg category at CWG 2022. She was ecstatic after winning her first medal in the Olympics and is now dreaming of winning her second medal.

A mentor is very necessary. i’d wish to share Associate in Nursing expertise from my life. I had nobody to speak to once I was feeling down. There square measure smart and dangerous moments in each sport. A mentor will simply get you out of that mental entice, coaches and oldsters enclosed. “If I had a mentor once I was on the verge of breaking down and on the brink of quit,” aforementioned Sakshi, “they may have helped me elevate my spirits.”

It is very important to get an education. I have studied in an English-medium school from the beginning. I had to manage the stress of playing the sport and going to tuitions and school when I started wrestling. “I told my parents that I wanted to quit studies and pursue wrestling but they did not allow me to do that,” she said.

Now I know the importance of those words. As today’s education is really handy to me, I can deal with many challenges when I go abroad for tournaments. I can easily do everything, whether it is speaking to someone or filling a simple form or basic understanding of things. “She concluded that education is as important as sports because it helps your confidence.”
