Sanjay Dhotre began his political career as a member of the Akola Zilla Parishad and was later elected as the president of the Zilla Parishad in 1992. In 2004, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Akola constituency on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket and won. He has been re-elected as an MP from the same constituency in every subsequent election.

During his tenure as an MP, Sanjay Dhotre has held various positions in the government. He has served as the chairman of the Standing Committee on Energy and as a member of the Committee on Ethics, the Committee on Petitions, and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power.
