Obama’s Childhood

1. Barack Obama was born on November 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was a black Kenyan who worked as a foreign service officer for the United States government.

2. Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was a white American who graduated from University of Hawaii at Manoa with a degree in economics. She met Obama Sr. while she was studying at the University of Hawaii and they married in 1965.

3. After graduating from college, Dunham worked as an analyst for the Chicago branch of Prudential Insurance Company. In 1981, she married then-professor Barry Soetoro, who later became President Barack Obama.

4. Obama spent most of his early childhood living in Indonesia while his mother worked on her book about Indonesian culture and politics. He returned to Hawaii to attend school from 1977 to 1981 and then went back to Indonesia for two years to study language and culture before returning to America to attend law school at Harvard University.

5. Obama began his political career as a community organizer in Chicago before being elected to the Illinois state senate in 1996. He was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. In January of 2013, he was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

6. Obama was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago’s South Side until he decided to run for president in 2007. Trinity has had a strained relationship with Obama since then and in 2011, tried to remove him as a member of their church by petitioning the United Church of Christ to excommunicate him.

7. Obama’s parents were essentially raised by his grandparents after his mother left Koko , a Luo tribe in Kenya, to marry his American father. Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, died of ovarian cancer when Barack was ten years old. His father, Barack Obama Sr., then married Lolo Soetoro, who became his step-mother and raised him as her own son until he left to attend Occidental College in Los Angeles at the age of 19. Obama’s half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng was born after he went to college. She is the product of his stepmother’s relationship with a man who was not her husband.
