Assam: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam has taken a significant step towards ending subsidized power benefits for ministers and senior government officials. In a recent statement, CM Sarma revealed that during his interactions with officials from the Power Department, he was informed about the practice of deducting a nominal monthly power bill from the salaries of ministers and senior officers.
Recognizing the need for transparency and accountability in power consumption, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma swiftly instructed the Power Department to install individual prepaid meters in every government quarter, including residences in the ministerial colony. This proactive measure aims to eliminate any instances of subsidized power being enjoyed by ministers, officers, or government employees.
The implementation of individual prepaid meters will ensure that government officials pay for the exact amount of power they consume, without any subsidies or preferential treatment. This move aligns with CM Sarma’s commitment to promoting fair and equitable distribution of resources and upholding principles of good governance.
By introducing prepaid meters, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma seeks to instill a sense of responsibility among government employees towards energy conservation and efficient use of resources. It also sends a strong message that public servants should not receive special privileges at the expense of taxpayers’ money.
The decision to install prepaid meters reflects CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s proactive approach toward addressing systemic inefficiencies and promoting accountability within the government machinery.
