CM Mamata Banerjee Mourns the Passing of Renowned Economist Prof. Nirmala Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed profound grief at the passing of Prof. Nirmala Banerjee, a highly regarded economist and the mother of Nobel laureate Prof. Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee. The eminent economist, Prof. Nirmala Banerjee, breathed her last in Kolkata, marking a significant loss in the academic and public sphere. Mamata Banerjee revealed that she had visited Prof. Nirmala Banerjee at the hospital the day before her passing.

Describing Prof. Nirmala Banerjee’s illustrious career, Mamata Banerjee noted that she had received training at the London School of Economics and served as a former Professor of Economics at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata. Additionally, she was married to the late distinguished economist Prof. Dipak Banerjee, associated with the Presidency College.

Expressing her personal connection and memories shared with Prof. Nirmala Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee emphasized the significant void left by her demise. She offered heartfelt condolences not only to Prof. Abhijit, his brother Aniruddha, and other family members but also to Prof. Nirmala Banerjee’s friends, students, and well-wishers, extending her sympathies during this time of loss and mourning.
