Millets, often referred to as “Nutri-cereals,” are gaining prominence in Uttar Pradesh, thanks to the initiative led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The state government’s efforts to promote millet cultivation are aimed at improving the health and well-being of its residents while also boosting the income of farmers.
In a significant move, the government has set support prices for millet and maize in Kasganj district, providing assurance to farmers. The support price for millet has been fixed at ₹2,500 per quintal, while maize is being supported at ₹2,090 per quintal.
“This decision is expected to incentivize millet farming and encourage farmers to diversify their crops. Millets are known for their nutritional value, and their cultivation aligns with the goal of promoting healthier dietary choices”.
“The support prices offer financial security to farmers, ensuring that their hard work is rewarded fairly. By actively promoting millet, the government aims to improve food security, reduce the risk of malnutrition, and enhance agricultural sustainability”.
Millets are drought-resistant and well-suited to the climate of many regions in Uttar Pradesh, making them a valuable addition to the state’s agricultural landscape. Their cultivation can also contribute to sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation.
