Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar commemorated the birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar, a prominent freedom fighter and nationalist leader. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jaishankar praised Savarkar’s enduring legacy of courage, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to Bharat, which continues to inspire generations.
Veer Savarkar, born on May 28, 1883, was not only a politician and activist but also a prolific writer who played a pivotal role in shaping the Hindu nationalist political ideology of Hindutva. His contributions to the Indian independence movement were significant, marked by his fearless advocacy for complete independence from British colonial rule.
Veer Savarkar’s journey in the struggle for freedom began during his student days and continued through his involvement with organizations such as India House and the Free India Society while studying in the United Kingdom. Despite facing imprisonment and exile, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the cause of India’s liberation.
The prefix “Veer,” meaning ‘brave,’ aptly symbolizes Savarkar’s fearless spirit and indomitable resolve in the face of adversity. His writings, including the banned book “The Indian War of Independence,” served as a rallying cry for revolutionary action against British oppression.
Despite enduring hardships, including incarceration in the notorious Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Veer Savarkar never wavered in his dedication to the nation. His release in 1924 marked a new chapter in his life, where he continued to champion Hindu political and social unity, advocating for the idea of India as a Hindu Rashtra.
While Veer Savarkar’s legacy remains contentious and subject to varied interpretations, his contributions to the Indian freedom struggle and his role in shaping nationalist discourse cannot be denied. Dr. Jaishankar’s tribute underscores the enduring relevance of Savarkar’s ideals in contemporary India, reminding us of the importance of honoring those who dedicated their lives to the nation’s cause.
