Covid: In a concerning development, a new Covid variant named JN.1, a descendant of the BA.2.86 lineage, has been identified, prompting heightened attention from health authorities, experts, and the public. This emergence has had a direct impact on India’s Covid landscape, with the active caseload rising to 1,828 on Monday, accompanied by one reported death in Kerala, where the JN.1 subvariant was recently detected. Consequently, the central government has issued advisories to state governments, urging them to ramp up health arrangements.
Key Updates on JN.1 Covid Subvariant: Understanding the Landscape
- Origin and Lineage: The JN.1 subvariant was first detected in Luxembourg and is traced back to the Pirola variant (BA.2.86), itself originating from the Omicron subvariant.
- Unique Mutations: Notably, the new Covid variant exhibits a significant number of unique mutations, particularly in the spike protein. This characteristic raises concerns regarding increased infectivity and potential immune evasion.
- Symptoms: Individuals infected with JN.1 may experience symptoms such as fever, runny nose, sore throat, and headache. Most cases manifest as mild upper respiratory symptoms, typically resolving within four to five days.
- India’s Situation: In India, the JN.1 subvariant has been identified in Kerala. A 79-year-old woman tested positive in an RT-PCR test on November 18, displaying mild symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) and subsequently recovering from Covid-19.
- Active Cases and Home Isolation: Presently, more than 90% of Covid cases in India are categorized as mild, with individuals opting for home isolation to manage the illness.
- International Detection: An Indian traveler from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli district was identified with the JN.1 subvariant in Singapore after traveling on October 25.
