In a swift and coordinated response to a distress call, the Indian Navy’s mission-deployed platforms successfully thwarted a maritime incident involving the hijacking of the Malta-flagged vessel MV Ruen in the Arabian Sea. The vessel, with 18 crew members onboard, had issued a Mayday message on the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) portal on the evening of December 14, 2023, signaling a boarding by approximately six unknown individuals.
Immediate Naval Response:
Reacting promptly to the evolving situation, the Indian Navy took decisive measures to address the crisis. Naval Maritime Patrol aircraft, engaged in surveillance operations in the area, were rerouted to locate and provide assistance to MV Ruen. Simultaneously, a naval warship on Anti-Piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden was diverted to join the efforts to ensure the safety of the hijacked vessel and its crew.
Surveillance and Monitoring:
The Naval Maritime Patrol aircraft successfully overflew the MV Ruen during the early hours of December 15, 2023. Since then, Indian Navy aircraft have been continuously monitoring the vessel’s movements, revealing that it is currently heading towards the coast of Somalia. This real-time monitoring has been crucial in assessing the situation and formulating strategic responses.
Interception of MV Ruen:
Taking assertive action, an Indian Navy warship, strategically deployed in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy patrols, intercepted MV Ruen in the early hours of December 16, 2023. This interception marked a significant milestone in the Navy’s efforts to neutralize the threat and secure the hijacked vessel.
Ongoing Coordination:
The overall situation is under scrutiny, with the Indian Navy maintaining seamless coordination with other relevant agencies and Maritime Security Coordination Centers (MNF) in the region. This collaborative effort ensures a comprehensive and effective response to maritime incidents, promoting the safety of merchant shipping and upholding maritime security in the region.
