In a poignant ceremony at Parliament House, New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu offered floral tributes to Bhagwan Birsa Munda, commemorating his birth anniversary celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. This solemn tribute acknowledges the indomitable spirit of Birsa Munda, an iconic figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.
Birsa Munda: A Symbol of Resistance
Born on November 15, 1875, in the village of Ulihatu in Ranchi district, now in Khunti district of Jharkhand, Birsa Munda emerged as a symbol of tribal independence activism and a folk hero. His legacy is deeply intertwined with his courageous leadership during a tribal religious millenarian movement in the late 19th century, challenging the oppressive forces of the British Raj.
The Munda belt of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada, and Bandgaon became the epicenter of the revolt led by Birsa Munda, reflecting the collective resistance against unfair land-grabbing practices by colonial and local authorities that dismantled the traditional tribal land system.
Birsa Munda’s Educational Journey and Faith
Birsa’s early education in Salga under the guidance of his teacher Jaipal Nag laid the foundation for a journey marked by defiance and resilience. His conversion to Christianity at the German Mission School was a pivotal moment that exposed him to the insidious aims of Britishers attempting to convert tribals through education.
Disillusioned by this revelation, Birsa dropped out of school and founded the Birsait faith. The faith gained traction among the Munda community, becoming a formidable challenge to British activities. The Birsaits boldly proclaimed the British as their true enemies, not Christian Mundas.
Remembering Birsa Munda
As President Droupadi Murmu pays homage to Birsa Munda, his portrait hanging in the Indian Parliament Museum stands as a testament to his enduring impact on the struggle for freedom and the preservation of tribal identity.
