The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, conveyed her condolences upon learning about the passing of Shri Shafiqur Rahman Barq, a seasoned Member of Parliament renowned for his dedicated service to the nation. Barq, who represented the Samajwadi Party, breathed his last on February 27, 2024.
In her statement, President Murmu acknowledged Barq’s several decades of commitment to public service, highlighting his contributions as an elected representative. She extended heartfelt sympathies to his family members and followers, recognizing the loss felt by the nation at his demise.
Shafiqur Rahman Barq, born on July 11, 1930, had a notable political career, having been elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times from constituencies such as Moradabad and Sambhal, the latter being his most recent victory in 2019. Throughout his tenure, Barq remained an influential figure in Indian politics, advocating for various causes and representing the interests of his constituents.
However, Shafiqur Rahman Barq’s tenure was not without controversy. He gained attention for his stance on Vande Mataram, asserting that it was incompatible with Islam, drawing criticism from various quarters. Additionally, he faced widespread condemnation for his controversial remarks defending the Taliban’s actions in Afghanistan, likening them to India’s own struggle for independence.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Shafiqur Rahman Barq left a lasting impact on Indian politics, shaping debates and discussions with his bold viewpoints and unwavering dedication to public service. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by both his admirers and detractors alike.
