Maulana Azad: A Freedom Fighter and Educational Visionary
Born on November 11, 1888, Maulana Azad emerged as a towering figure in India’s fight against colonial rule. An independence activist, writer, and senior leader of the Indian National Congress, Azad’s contributions extended beyond political realms into the realm of education, earning him the title of the First Minister of Education in independent India.
The Early Years and Political Rise
In his youth, Maulana Azad demonstrated literary prowess, composing poetry in Urdu and writing treatises on religion and philosophy. His journalistic endeavors, marked by works critical of British rule, propelled him into prominence as a leader of the Khilafat Movement, where he crossed paths with Mahatma Gandhi. Azad’s commitment to non-violent civil disobedience and Gandhi’s ideals led to his active involvement in the non-cooperation movement against the Rowlatt Acts in 1919.
At the age of 35, Azad made history by becoming the youngest President of the Indian National Congress in 1923, showcasing his dynamic leadership and unwavering dedication to the cause of Swaraj.
Architect of Jamia Millia Islamia and Educational Visionary
Maulana Azad’s dedication to education is encapsulated in his role as a member of the foundation committee for Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920. Notably, the main gate of the university’s main campus in New Delhi bears his name, a testament to his contributions to its establishment. Azad’s commitment to education is further honored by the celebration of his birthday as National Education Day across India.
Leader of the Dharasana Satyagraha and Advocate of Unity
Azad’s leadership extended beyond politics to encompass critical social issues. He was a key organizer of the Dharasana Satyagraha in 1931, advocating Hindu-Muslim unity, secularism, and socialism. Serving as Congress president from 1940 to 1945, he navigated the tumultuous period of the Quit India rebellion, enduring imprisonment alongside the entire Congress leadership.
Azad’s efforts to foster Hindu-Muslim unity were evident in his role as the editor of the Al-Hilal newspaper, where he championed the cause of unity through thoughtful discourse.
