Tamil cinema actor Vijay, a prominent figure in the film industry, declared on Friday his foray into politics with the launch of his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (Association of a Victorious Tamil Nadu). His associates formally submitted the registration application for the party to the Election Commission of India in Delhi, marking a significant move in the dynamic landscape of Tamil Nadu politics. The 49-year-old actor aims to contest the 2026 assembly elections to bring about the political change that the people of Tamil Nadu desire.
A Legacy of Stars in Tamil Nadu Politics:
Actor Vijay’s decision to enter politics follows in the footsteps of numerous Tamil cinema stars who have successfully transitioned from the silver screen to the political arena. Tamil Nadu has been a pioneer in electing chief ministers with roots in the film industry, including three actors. Vijay’s move adds another illustrious name to this list, indicating a continued intersection of entertainment and politics in the state.
2026 Assembly Elections: A Three-Cornered Contest:
The 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will witness Vijay entering the political battleground against Dravidian rivals, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). These two parties have been dominant in the state, forming successive governments since 1967. Vijay’s political debut sets the stage for a three-cornered contest, with the ruling DMK in the INDIA bloc, AIADMK, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also vying for electoral success.

In his announcement, Vijay clarified that his party would not participate or extend support to any party in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Instead, his focus is on the 2026 assembly elections, with a commitment to providing the much-needed political change in Tamil Nadu. He positioned himself as an opponent to the DMK, AIADMK, and the BJP, citing concerns about administrative malpractices, corruption, and divisive politics based on caste and religion.
Actor Vijay emphasized the need for a selfless, transparent, caste-free, visionary, and corruption-free administration in Tamil Nadu. His vision reflects the aspirations of the people who, according to Vijay, are yearning for a transformative political change.
Reactions from Political Circles:
State’s sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and BJP state president K Annamalai welcomed Vijay’s decision, indicating a positive reception from some political quarters. However, AIADMK’s organizing secretary D Jayakumar expressed a more cautious sentiment, stating, “In politics, some drown and some swim. Let’s see what happens to Vijay.” The diverse reactions highlight the anticipation and speculation surrounding Vijay’s political journey.
