On 31st of December Amit Shah, Union Minister of Home and Cooperation, addressed the ‘Cooperative Beneficiaries Conference’ in Bengaluru, Karnataka today. The occasion was graced by the presence of several dignitaries including Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj Bommai and Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi.
Amit Shah said in his address that the cooperative movement in Karnataka has been progressing at a good speed for more than a hundred years. “In 1905,” he said, “the first cooperative society in the whole country was established in the Gadag district of Karnataka.” An example of successful cooperative movement, today, is Amul, KRIBHCO, IFFCO, and Lijjat Papad.
Amit Shah said A huge achievement, the Union Minister of Cooperation said that under the Nandini brand in Karnataka about 23 lakh farmers, mostly women, are paid Rs 28 crore per day making their lives more prosperous. “The beauty of the cooperatives is ‘Production for Masses, Production by Masses‘,”
The cooperative movement has been given new momentum and long life by the P M Modi said, Amit Shah. He said that out of thirty lakh cooperatives in the whole world, India has nine lakh cooperatives. PACS are cooperative societies in India that link about 91 percent of the country’s population in one way or another, covering 70 percent of the nation’s farmers.
Shah said, There are 33 state-level cooperative banks, 363 district-level cooperative banks, and 63,000 PACS in the country, Today, “19 percent of our agriculture finance is done through cooperative societies.”
Cooperatives are responsible for 35 percent of fertilizer distribution, 30 percent of fertilizer production, 40 percent of sugar production, 13 percent of procurement of wheat, and 20 percent of paddy procurement.

“It is not only the responsibility of Karnataka to strengthen the cooperative movement in the state, but other states across the country must also establish some ideals so that they can get the message and adopt the best practices from Karnataka to create a new model of cooperation in their respective states,” said Union Home and Cooperation Minister.
