On the 31st of January, Amit Shah pays tribute to the first Param Vir Chakra awardee Major Somnath Sharma on his birth anniversary for making the supreme sacrifice for the country.

He said, “To make Somnath ji’s sacrifice immortal, the Modi government named the island in Andaman-Nicobar as Somnath Island. Had the privilege of honoring his family on this occasion”.

Major Somnath Sharma, who was born on January 31, 1923, and died on November 3, 1947, was an officer of the Indian Army. He was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India’s highest military decoration, which he was awarded posthumously.

In 1942, Sharma was posted to the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment. He served in Burma during the Arakan Campaign of World War II and was mentioned in despatches.

Somnath Sharma was killed in action on 3 November 1947 while repulsing Pakistani infiltrators near Srinagar Airport during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his gallantry and sacrifice during the Battle of Badgam.
