Amit Shah Chairs 2nd Meeting on Cooperative Sector Growth

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transform cooperatives into vibrant business units, announcing significant progress in forming new societies and implementing over 100 initiatives to boost agriculture, dairy, fisheries, and cooperative governance.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah chaired the second meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Cooperation in New Delhi, focusing on initiatives to strengthen India’s cooperative sector. Attended by Ministers of State, committee members, and senior officials, the meeting reviewed major achievements and future plans.

Shri Shah announced that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, 35,395 new cooperative societies have been formed in just four years, including 6,182 Multipurpose Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (MPACS), 27,562 dairy cooperatives, and 1,651 fisheries cooperatives. He emphasized that cooperatives are vital in creating prosperity for landless and poor communities.

Three new national-level cooperative societies have been established:

  • National Cooperative Organic Limited (NCOL): Responsible for certifying, branding, packaging, and marketing organic produce from farmers to ensure better market value.
  • National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL): To facilitate export of farmers’ produce directly to global markets.
  • Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL): For conservation and production of traditional Indian seeds, with contracts for small farmers.

The Ministry has launched over 100 initiatives in the past four years, focusing on PACS, dairy, fisheries, cooperative banks, sugar cooperatives, and governance systems, backed by policy reforms, financial support, and digital upgrades. The National Cooperative Policy-2025 outlines a sustainable roadmap for the sector, integrating schemes like PMMSY and NPDD to strengthen grassroots operations.

Under White Revolution 2.0, the goal is to boost milk procurement by 50% over the next five years. To date, 15,691 new Dairy Cooperative Societies have been formed, while 11,871 existing societies have been strengthened. Additionally, NDDB and 25 Milk Unions have inked MoUs to establish biogas plants within dairy cooperatives.

The Tribhuvan Sahkari University, set up through a Parliamentary Act, has been accorded the status of an institution of national importance, aimed at unifying and advancing cooperative education and training.

The meeting concluded with suggestions from committee members and a reaffirmation of the Ministry’s commitment to make cooperatives engines of growth, equality, and rural self-reliance.
