Badlapur School Sexual Abuse: On Tuesday, thousands of protesters gathered at Badlapur railway station in Maharashtra’s Thane district, blocking train tracks in response to the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls by a school sweeper. The demonstration caused significant disruptions, including delays and diversions of local and long-distance trains.

The alleged assaults occurred on August 12-13, 2024, in the girls’ toilet at a co-ed school in Badlapur. The accused, Akshay Shinde, a 23-year-old cleaner hired on August 1, 2024, reportedly committed the crimes in the absence of female staff supervision. The matter surfaced when one girl complained to her parents about pain, leading to the discovery of the second assault.

Police Intervention

After nine hours of protests, police used lathi-charge to disperse the crowd at Badlapur railway station. The action followed significant disruption of train services and widespread public outcry.

The incident came to light following a complaint filed on August 16, leading to Shinde’s arrest. The FIR detailed that the assaults happened between 9 am and 12 pm on August 13. The girls’ families discovered the assaults after talking to each other and noticing the victims’ distress.
