Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Bengaluru witnessed its hottest day of the year so far on Friday, March 29, recording a maximum temperature of 36.4°C, the highest in the last five years. Both Bengaluru City and Kempegowda International Airport stations reported this high temperature, marking a significant heatwave for the region.

A. Prasad, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bengaluru, noted that the city’s temperature surpassed 37°C in 2019 and 2017. The highest-ever March temperature of 37.3°C was recorded in 1996.

The IMD’s forecast for Bengaluru and other districts of Karnataka predicts dry weather until April 4. Some areas, including Kalaburagi, are experiencing temperatures above 40°C, with several others exceeding 38°C. Heat wave conditions are expected in certain districts, prompting warnings from the IMD.

Prasad stated that when the average district temperature surpasses 38°C, a heatwave warning or yellow alert is issued. Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag, Ballari, and Tumakuru registered temperatures exceeding 38°C on Friday morning.

The IMD has also cautioned that maximum temperatures may rise by two to three degrees Celsius in interior Karnataka over the next few days. There is no immediate relief in sight, with dry weather conditions anticipated across the state until the second week of April.

Prasad emphasized the need for preparedness and awareness regarding heat wave conditions, highlighting the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. The IMD will continue to monitor weather patterns closely, providing updates and advisories as necessary.
