Constitution Day 2023: India observes Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, on November 26, commemorating the 132nd birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. As the chair of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in formulating the Constitution. Originally celebrated as Law Day, the Indian government officially transformed it into Constitution Day in 2015. November 26 signifies the adoption of the constitution in 1949, with it coming into effect on January 26, 1950.

Renowned for his advocacy for the marginalized, Dr. Ambedkar led the committee that finalized the draft of the Indian Constitution, a process spanning 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

In a significant move, a 7-foot statue of BR Ambedkar in a lawyer’s attire will be unveiled on the Supreme Court premises, an initiative led by Chief Justice Chandrachud. The inauguration, set for 10.30 am on Sunday, will be telecast live, and the statue prominently features BR Ambedkar holding a copy of the Constitution, symbolizing his pivotal role in its creation.

Across the nation, from metropolises to small towns and villages, statues of BR Ambedkar with uplifted hands serve as powerful symbols inspiring progress. This installation underscores the enduring relevance of Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to India’s constitutional framework.
