Bihar’s Gopalganj district is currently grappling with an impending crisis as the River Gandak at Dumariaghat reaches severe flood levels. The Central Water Commission’s official flood forecast has sounded the alarm, indicating that the situation is far from stable.
The river’s water level at Dumariaghat has surged to 62.36 meters, marking a steady trend that is cause for immediate concern. This level is worrisome as it is 0.14 meters above the river’s designated danger level of 62.22 meters. The rise in water level signifies an increased risk of flooding in the surrounding areas, potentially causing damage to infrastructure and displacing residents.
“The situation calls for urgent action as local authorities and disaster response teams mobilize resources to deal with the evolving flood scenario. The Central Water Commission’s flood forecast acts as a critical tool in guiding emergency response efforts and aiding in decision-making for mitigating the potential impact of flooding”.
“As the river’s water level continues to hold in a severe situation, the community’s safety remains paramount. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to closely monitor official communications, adhere to evacuation instructions if given, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and property”.
The situation along the River Gandak underscores the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and proactive planning. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, local communities, and disaster management teams are essential in responding effectively to such challenges.
