DGT and Shell India Launch Green Skills and EV Training Program Across Key States

In a significant step towards advancing green energy and sustainable mobility in India, the Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has partnered with Shell India to roll out a nationwide Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program. This ambitious initiative was officially launched on June 12, 2025, and will be implemented through Edunet Foundation, Shell’s training partner, in select Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) across Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

A Future-Ready Skill Development Framework

Designed to address the surging demand for skilled professionals in green energy and e-mobility sectors, the DGT–Shell initiative introduces a tiered training model to reach a wide base of learners and trainers. The training will be conducted in three levels:

  1. Advanced Level: A 240-hour intensive EV Technician course at four premier NSTIs, enabling participants to master in-depth technical knowledge.
  2. Intermediate Level: A 90-hour job-focused EV skills program offered at 12 ITIs, all equipped with Shell-supported electric vehicle labs.
  3. Foundation Level: A 50-hour green skills module at additional ITIs without dedicated lab infrastructure, ensuring basic environmental and sustainability awareness.

This blended curriculum, co-developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covers critical topics such as EV systems, battery technologies, diagnostics, digital tools, and essential safety standards.

Comprehensive Support Ecosystem

Beyond classroom instruction, the program offers a holistic ecosystem that includes:

  • Training of Trainers (ToT): Over 250 instructors will receive specialized training to deliver content effectively and stay updated with evolving technologies.
  • Specialized EV Skill Labs: Hands-on learning will be powered through modern labs featuring tools and equipment in line with global industry benchmarks.
  • Co-branded Certifications: Graduates will receive certifications jointly issued by Shell and DGT, adding credibility and weight to their qualifications.
  • Structured Placement Support: Participants will receive job readiness training and placement assistance to help them secure roles in the green energy and EV industries.

Driving the National Green Agenda

India’s vision to become a global hub for green technology and electric mobility is gaining momentum, supported by landmark initiatives such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme. Complementary state-level policies in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are further strengthening the shift to sustainable transportation and energy. The rise in EV adoption, charging infrastructure, and manufacturing has made it imperative to develop a capable workforce that can support and accelerate this transition.

As the nation’s apex vocational training body, DGT is at the helm of mobilizing institutions, aligning skill development with industry standards, and ensuring that youth are trained to meet emerging market needs.

Voices from Leadership

Speaking on the significance of this collaboration, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE and Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, remarked:

“Our partnership with Shell India highlights the government’s strong focus on integrating skill development with sustainability. This initiative supports our broader goal of building a workforce that’s prepared not just for today’s jobs, but also for tomorrow’s climate challenges.”

Smt. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General of DGT, echoed the importance of integrating modern technology into vocational training:

“This partnership with Shell India is a focused step in bringing cutting-edge training infrastructure and industry-relevant curriculum into our ITIs and NSTIs.”

Representing the corporate perspective, Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson of Shell Group of Companies in India & Senior Vice President of Shell Lubricants Asia-Pacific, said:

“Equipping youth with green energy skills is an important step towards building a lower-carbon future. This initiative empowers young people to thrive in an evolving energy landscape.”

A Vision for a Sustainable Future

This forward-thinking partnership between DGT and Shell India is more than just a training program—it is a strategic investment in the nation’s green future. By providing future-ready skills, real-world experience, and strong industry linkages, the initiative aims to create a generation of skilled professionals who will drive India’s transition toward sustainable growth and climate resilience.

With hands-on training, expert-led sessions, and meaningful industry collaboration, India’s youth are being empowered not just to participate in—but to lead—the global green economy.
