Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, successfully concluded the 5th India-Philippines Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation with Enrique A. Manalo, Philippine Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs. The meeting focused on enhancing contacts, broadening cooperation, and strengthening the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations as they approach their 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Defense and Maritime Security
One of the key areas covered during the meeting was defense and maritime security. Dr. S. Jaishankar and Enrique A. Manalo discussed strategies to enhance cooperation in this domain. Recognizing the importance of ensuring a stable and secure maritime environment, both countries expressed their commitment to collaborative efforts in counter-terrorism, transnational crimes, and defense partnerships. Strengthening maritime security cooperation is crucial for promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Economic Ties and Development Cooperation
The meeting also emphasized the growing economic ties between India and the Philippines. Dr. S. Jaishankar and Enrique A. Manalo discussed strategies to further boost trade and investments between the two nations. They highlighted the potential for collaboration in various sectors, including health and pharmaceuticals, tourism, air services, agriculture, fintech, science and technology (S&T), and space cooperation. Strengthening economic cooperation will not only benefit both countries but also contribute to regional economic growth and prosperity.
People-to-People Ties and Cultural Exchanges
Recognizing the significance of people-to-people ties, Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of enhancing tourism and education collaborations between India and the Philippines. Promoting cultural exchanges, tourism, and educational partnerships can foster a deeper understanding and friendship between the peoples of both nations. Such initiatives will contribute to greater mutual appreciation and facilitate stronger bilateral relations.
Collaboration in Regional and Multilateral Forums
Dr. S. Jaishankar and Enrique A. Manalo acknowledged the strong collaboration between India and the Philippines in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other multilateral forums. They emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in these platforms to address regional and global challenges effectively. The meeting highlighted the shared vision and strong convergence between India and the Philippines on key issues, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
