Odisha: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) celebrated a major achievement as it conducted a successful flight test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile. The test carried out at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on January 12, 2024, showcased the missile’s effectiveness against a high-speed unmanned aerial target at a very low altitude.

During the flight test, the AKASH-NG system, comprising the missile with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar, and Command, Control and Communication System, intercepted and successfully destroyed the target. The successful test validates the seamless functioning of the entire weapon system, reflecting the technological prowess achieved by DRDO.

The performance of the AKASH-NG system was further verified through data captured by multiple Radars, Telemetry, and Electro-Optical Tracking Systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur. Senior officials from DRDO, Indian Air Force (IAF), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) witnessed the test, emphasizing the collaborative efforts involved in the project.

The AKASH-NG system represents a cutting-edge missile system designed to intercept high-speed, agile aerial threats. The successful flight test marks a crucial step toward initiating User trials, demonstrating the readiness and effectiveness of the system for deployment.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh commended the DRDO, IAF, PSUs, and the industry for the successful flight test. He highlighted that the system’s development will significantly enhance India’s air defence capabilities. Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, also extended congratulations to the teams involved in the successful flight test, acknowledging their dedication and expertise in advancing India’s defence capabilities.
