EC Notifies Schedule for 2025 Vice-President Poll

The Election Commission of India has officially announced the schedule and nomination process for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, with polling set for September 9, 2025, if required.

In a significant move towards conducting the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, the Election Commission of India, through a notification published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary on August 7, 2025, has released the full schedule for the election.

As per the official notification:

  • The deadline for filing nominations is August 21.
  • August 22 will mark the scrutiny of nominations.
  • August 25 is the last date to withdraw candidatures.
  • If necessary, the polling will take place on September 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at designated polling locations.

As per the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, Shri P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the election. He will be assisted by Ms. Garima Jain (Joint Secretary) and Shri Vijay Kumar (Director, Rajya Sabha Secretariat) as Assistant Returning Officers.

The nomination process has been clearly outlined:

  1. Submission of nomination papers must be made by the candidate or one of the proposers/seconders in Room No. RS-28, Parliament House between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., excluding public holidays, on or before August 21.
  2. A certified copy of the candidate’s entry in the electoral roll is mandatory.
  3. Each candidate must deposit ₹15,000 in cash with the Returning Officer or provide proof of deposit in RBI or a government treasury.
  4. Nomination forms are available at the same office and time.
  5. Scrutiny of valid nominations will be held in Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, Parliament House on August 22 at 11 a.m.
  6. Withdrawals can be made until 3 p.m. on August 25 by the candidate or an authorised proposer/seconder.

To ensure widespread dissemination, these notifications will be simultaneously published in all State/UT official gazettes.
