A grave situation unfolds as the Central Water Commission (CWC) issues a dire flood forecast for the River Kosi at Birpur in Bihar’s Supaul district. The river’s water levels have escalated to a severe state, posing an immediate threat to the local communities and areas along its banks.

According to the latest data provided by the CWC, the River Kosi at Birpur is currently flowing at an alarming level of 75.53 meters. This steady upward trend in water levels is maintaining a critical status, placing the river 0.83 meters above its designated danger level of 74.7 meters.

“The severity of the situation underscores the potential risks faced by the residents, infrastructure, and environment in the Supaul district. The persistent rise in water levels raises concerns of potential flooding, which can result in widespread inundation, displacement of residents, damage to property, disruption of essential services, and environmental distress”.

“The critical status of the River Kosi serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of regions susceptible to flooding, particularly during the monsoon season. The confluence of heavy rainfall, swollen rivers, and insufficient drainage systems can exacerbate the flood situation and pose formidable challenges for local response efforts”.

The CWC’s flood forecast serves as an invaluable tool, providing crucial information to the public, government agencies, and relief organizations. It enables informed decision-making and allocation of resources to effectively manage and respond to the unfolding flood scenario.
