Empowering MSMEs: The Role of CRTDHs in Bridging Industry and Research

The Common Research and Technology Development Hubs (CRTDHs) program, initiated by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2014, stands as a catalyst for translational research and the fusion of industry and research institutions. These hubs have a pivotal mission to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge, innovation, and the practical manifestation of marketable products and services. By providing state-of-the-art resources and facilities to Micro, Small Enterprises & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and innovators, they facilitate the transformation of research outcomes into viable commercial solutions.

Fostering Industry-Institution Interaction:

The CRTDH program has created a dynamic ecosystem encompassing five key sectors: Electronics/Renewable Energy, Affordable Health, Environmental Interventions, Low-Cost Machining, and New Materials/Chemical Processes. Currently, 18 CRTDHs are strategically located across various Public Funded Research Institutions (PFRIs) throughout India. These hubs serve as catalysts for industry-institution interaction, promoting collaborative efforts, and nurturing knowledge exchange between researchers and industry experts, ultimately generating significant societal impact.

Chintan Shivir-CRTDHs Empowering MSMEs:

As part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” initiative and the journey towards “Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” DSIR is organizing “Chintan Shivir-CRTDHs Empowering MSMEs” across established CRTDHs. These forums facilitate in-depth discussions and engagement with diverse stakeholders. Multiple Chintan Shivirs have already been successfully conducted at various locations, including IIT Kharagpur, CSIR-IITR Lucknow, and CSIR-CMERI Durgapur. The forthcoming one-day Chintan Shivir will be hosted by the CRTDH at CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Bhubaneshwar (IMMT) in collaboration with DSIR.

Key Highlights of the Event:

The event will commence with a guided tour of the CRTDH facilities by the project coordinator, followed by an inaugural address from Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary, DSIR & Director General, CSIR, and Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneshwar. Dr. Sujata Chaklanobis, Scientist-G & Head-CRTDH, DSIR, will provide an overview of Chintan Shivir, accompanied by the release of an official video showcasing DSIR-CRTDH at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneshwar. Distinguished representatives from DSIR and industry associations, along with delegates from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), will actively participate in discussions aimed at exploring the advantages of CRTDH in their research and development endeavors.

Thematic Sessions and ‘Samvad’:

Thematic sessions will delve into the challenges faced by MSMEs, emphasizing research and development as problem-solving tools. Insights from delegates representing Chambers of Commerce and industry associations will be shared, shedding light on the R&D needs of MSMEs. The sessions will underscore the role of CRTDHs in empowering MSMEs with research infrastructure, futuristic technologies, and current and future opportunities. At the conclusion of the ‘Chintan Shivir,’ a ‘Samvad’ will identify five Grand Challenges faced by MSMEs/Startups/Innovators and explore possible solutions.

Conclusion:

This event aspires to harness the collective wisdom, knowledge, and expertise of government officials and stakeholders through in-depth discussions and strategic planning. The ultimate objective is to brainstorm solutions to challenges encountered by MSMEs, startups, and innovators in India, while simultaneously leveraging opportunities to establish the nation as a prominent global hub for industrial research and manufacturing.
