Farhan Akhtar is an Indian actor, director, screenwriter, playback singer, producer, and television host who works in Hindi movies. He was born on January 9, 1974. He grew up under the influence of the Indian film industry, born in Mumbai to screenwriters Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani.
After establishing a production company named Excel Entertainment along with Ritesh Sidhwani in 1999, Akhtar made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai (2001). The film was widely praised for its portrayal of modern Indian youth and won the National Award for Best Hindi Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Film (Critics).
He directed the cult war film Lakshya (2004) and made his Hollywood debut through the soundtrack of Bride and Prejudice (2004), for which he and sister Zoya Akhtar served as lyricists. After the commercial success of Don (2006), he directed a short film titled Positive (2007) to spread awareness on HIV-AIDS.
Early Life:
The second child of screenwriters Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, Farhan Akhtar was born in Mumbai. He has one elder sister, who is the writer–director Zoya Akhtar. He was only a child when his parents divorced; his father remarried actress Shabana Azmi in 1984. After graduating from Maneckji Cooper school in Mumbai, Akhtar pursued a law degree at HR College, also in Mumbai. Akhtar’s father, who is a Muslim by birth, is a socialist and an atheist by belief Akhtar’s mother, who was born into an Irani Zoroastrian family, is indifferent to religion.
Personal Life:
Akhtar married Adhuna Bhabani in 2000, after having been in a relationship with her for 3 years. Bhabani’s debut as a Bollywood hairstylist was also during the filming of his directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai. The couple has two daughters, Shakya and Akira.
They announced their separation after 16 years of marriage on 21 January 2016. After their divorce was finalized on 24 April 2017, Bhabani was given custody of their children. VJ Shibani Dandekar and Akhtar started dating in 2018. They got married in a non-religious ceremony at his Khandala farmhouse on 19 February 2022.
