Fungi Fighters: Harnessing Mushroom Power in the Battle Against COVID-19

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has spurred heightened interest in bioactive ingredients capable of bolstering the immune system. In response, researchers worldwide have turned their attention to bioactive compounds found in herbal sources and edible mushrooms, recognizing their potential to fortify immunity against SARS-CoV-2.

Edible mushrooms, widely available and nutritionally rich, have become a focal point of scientific inquiry. In North-East India, researchers from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have delved into the potential of mushrooms and their bioactive molecules in combating COVID-19 and other viral infections.

“Led by Prof. Ashis K Mukherjee, Director of IASST, the research group, including Dr. Aparup Patra, Dr. M. R. Khan, Dr. Sagar R. Barge, and Mr. Paran Baruah, conducted a critical analysis of current COVID-19 therapies versus the effectiveness of natural anti-infective, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic products derived from a diverse range of easily sourced mushrooms”.

In their comprehensive review article published in the Journal of Fungi, the scientists assessed the roles and mechanisms of 13 different mushroom-derived bioactive compounds in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection and addressing associated complications. Mushrooms are found to contain bioactive polysaccharides and compounds with immunomodulating, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and medicinal properties.

“Importantly, the study notes that mushroom-based drugs are undergoing human trials, showing promising results in countering SARS-CoV-2. The advantages of using edible mushrooms against viral infections are highlighted, emphasizing their potential as nutraceutical supplements with no side effects and as immunity boosters”.

The research also points to significant opportunities for a deeper understanding of the role of mushroom-derived bioactive compounds through rigorous pre-clinical and clinical studies. The coordination between researchers, health professionals, and policymakers is deemed essential to fully harness the therapeutic potential of mushrooms in the ongoing battle against COVID-19 and future viral threats.
