Social housing tenants across England could see significant savings on their energy bills, thanks to a multimillion-pound government initiative aimed at improving home energy efficiency. Secretary of State for Energy Security Claire Coutinho unveiled plans to allocate over £75 million from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund to provide free upgrades to tenants’ homes.
The upgrades, including insulation, double glazing, and heat pump installations, are part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and lower household bills. With funding available to 42 councils and housing associations, approximately 100,000 households are expected to benefit from the scheme, supporting around 1,300 jobs in the UK’s retrofit industry.
By enhancing energy efficiency in social homes, the initiative seeks to lift households out of fuel poverty and improve the overall comfort and well-being of tenants. Secretary Claire Coutinho emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting hard-working families by alleviating financial burdens through accessible home improvements.
Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Lord Callanan highlighted the positive impact of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund in providing warmer homes and cheaper bills for low-income families. The initiative not only addresses immediate financial concerns but also contributes to long-term environmental goals by reducing carbon emissions from residential properties.
The funding represents a significant investment in improving the energy performance of social housing, to ensure that nearly half of all homes in England achieve Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Band C or above. Through collaboration with housing associations and local councils, the government aims to maximize the reach of the program, benefiting as many social homes as possible.
The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund has already proven successful, with previous projects demonstrating tangible improvements in energy efficiency and cost savings for tenants. Durham County Council and Manchester City Council are among the recipients of funding, with residents reporting reduced energy costs and increased comfort in their homes.
Looking ahead, the government remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote energy efficiency and reduce household bills. With ongoing investments in low-carbon heating and retrofit programs, the aim is to create a more sustainable and affordable housing landscape for all residents.
The announcement of additional funding for the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund reinforces the government’s dedication to tackling fuel poverty, supporting green initiatives, and improving the quality of social housing across England.
