Gulshan Kumar Mehta was a renowned songwriter in the Hindi film industry. Born on April 12, 1934, in Lahore in a place called Sheikhupura, he started his career as a lyricist in the late 1960s. He went on to write memorable songs for some of the biggest Bollywood films of his time.

Early Life and Career:
Gulshan Kumar Mehta was born in a Punjabi family in Lahore, which is now a part of Pakistan. After the partition of India, his family migrated to Delhi. He started his career as a stenographer in the Indian Railways but soon realized that his passion was for writing. He started writing poetry in his free time and even published a few of his works in magazines.
Struggle and Journey:
Gulshan Kumar Mehta’s journey in the film industry was not an easy one. He struggled for years before finally getting a break in the late 1960s. Gulshan Babra had his first encounter with success during the same year with songs such as “Tumhein Yaad Hoga Kabhi Hum Mile The”, “Aakde Ka Dhanda”, and “Chandi Ke Chand Tukdo Ke Liye”. In their first joint film, Satta Bazaar, starring Meena Kumari and Balraj Sahni. Shantibhai Patel, the film’s distributor, gave him the name “Bawra” while making the film.
He went on to write songs for some of the biggest Bollywood films of his time, including “Satta Bazaar,” “Upkar,” “Haqeeqat,” “Satte Pe Satta,” and many more. His lyrics were known for their simplicity, yet they had a profound impact on the audience.
Legacy:
Gulshan Kumar Mehta passed away on 7 August 2009, at the age of 72. However, his legacy still lives on. His songs continue to be popular among music lovers even today. He was known for his ability to capture the emotions of the audience through his words.
Gulshan Kumar Mehta’s journey in the film industry is a story of struggle and success. He worked hard to establish himself as a lyricist and went on to become one of the most sought-after songwriters of his time. He left behind a legacy that continues to inspire many aspiring lyricists in the Hindi film industry. On his birth anniversary, we remember and celebrate his contribution to Indian music.
