Early Life and Family Background
Rohit Shetty was born on March 14, 1974, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, to the well-known stuntman and action choreographer, M.B. Shetty. He spent most of his childhood on the sets of Bollywood films and was influenced by his father’s work. Rohit’s mother, Ratna Shetty, was a Bollywood junior artist. He has four siblings.
Directorial Debut and Early Films
Rohit Shetty made his directorial debut with the film “Zameen” in 2003, which starred Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan. The film received mixed reviews and was an average performer at the box office. However, Rohit’s next film, “Sunday” (2008), starring Ajay Devgn and Arshad Warsi, was a commercial success.
Golmaal: A Turning Point in Career
The turning point in Rohit Shetty’s career came with the release of “Golmaal: Fun Unlimited” in 2006. The film was a comedy and starred Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, and Tusshar Kapoor. The film was a box-office hit and spawned three sequels – “Golmaal Returns” (2008), “Golmaal 3” (2010), and “Golmaal Again” (2017).
Chennai Express: The Box-Office Success
In 2013, Rohit Shetty directed “Chennai Express,” starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film was a romantic comedy and went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.
Singham and Simmba: The Franchise Films
Rohit Shetty directed “Singham” in 2011, which starred Ajay Devgn in the lead role. The film was a remake of a Tamil film of the same name and was a commercial success. It spawned a sequel, “Singham Returns,” in 2014. In 2018, Rohit Shetty directed another action-comedy film, “Simmba,” starring Ranveer Singh, which was a box-office success as well.
Production House and Television Shows
In 2011, Rohit Shetty launched his production house, Rohit Shetty Productions, which has produced several successful films, including the Golmaal and Singham franchises. The production house also produced the film “Bol Bachchan” (2012), which starred Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, and Asin. Rohit Shetty has also hosted and judged several television shows, including “Khatron Ke Khiladi” and “Comedy Circus.”

Rohit Shetty has received several awards and recognitions for his work in the Indian film industry. He has won many Filmfare Awards, including for Best Director.
