On the 5th of February PM Modi said, “While saluting Saint Ravidas ji on his birth anniversary, we remember his great messages. On this occasion, we reiterate our resolve for a just, harmonious, and prosperous society in line with his vision. Following his path, we are serving and empowering the poor through various initiatives”.

Saint Ravidas, also known as Guru Ravidas, was a 15th-century Indian mystic, poet, and social reformer who is revered by millions of people around the world, particularly in India. Born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Ravidas was a member of the Dalit (formerly known as “untouchable”) community and faced discrimination and oppression because of his birth. Despite these obstacles, he dedicated his life to spreading the message of love, equality, and justice, and his teachings continue to inspire people today.

Ravidas’s poems, which are written in the local dialect of Bhojpuri, are filled with spiritual wisdom and practical advice for leading a virtuous life. They address themes such as the importance of devotion to God, the need for compassion and kindness towards all beings, and the dangers of pride and greed. Many of these poems have been compiled into a collection known as the “Sant Ravidas ki Bani,” which is widely regarded as a sacred text.

In addition to his spiritual teachings, Ravidas was also a powerful voice for social justice. He spoke out against the caste system, which relegated members of the Dalit community to the bottom of society, and advocated for their rights and dignity. Through his example and teachings, he inspired many people to reject the prejudices and inequalities of the caste system and strive for a more equitable and just society.

The legacy of Saint Ravidas continues to this day, with his followers celebrating his birth anniversary, known as Jayanti, every year with great devotion and reverence. On this day, devotees gather at Saint Ravidas Temple in Varanasi to offer prayers and sing devotional songs in his honor.

Saint Ravidas was a visionary leader who transcended the boundaries of caste, religion, and social status to spread a message of love, equality, and justice. Through his teachings and example, he continues to inspire and guide people on the path of spiritual growth and social progress.
