The Salar Jung Museum, established in 1948, is a house-museum of the Salar Jung family. The museum has a collection of over 12,000 paintings from India and around the world. It also has sections devoted to Indian costumes, textiles, metalware, carpets, jewelry and other household objects.

Located in the heart of Hyderabad, this museum showcases a rich collection of objects from the Mughal, Chola, and Vijayanagar traditions. It was built in 1874 as a tribute to Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan’s ancestor Salar Jung I by his son Nawab Vizier Mir Mehdi Ali Khan who was also known as Salar Jung II.
How to Reach the Museum
Salar Jung Museum is located at Dargha Street, Nampally. Public transport to the museum is available and in fact, it’s a five-minute walk from Mehdipatnam Railway Station and Begumpet Airport. Visitors can also hire a taxi from these stations to reach the place. Museum Timings. The museum is open on all days, except for Mondays.

The Salar Jung Museum is open throughout the day, but closed on Mondays. The museum has a vast collection of paintings, textiles, miniature paintings and sculptures. It is also home to one of the world’s famous patola saris. There are various galleries featuring a variety of subjects including Medieval and Mughal art, Buddhist art from China and Tibet, Persian art and 16th century Indian painting.
Ticket Prices
Entry is free for children below the age of 15 and senior citizens above the age of 65. Children between 15-18 years and students between 18-25 years will be charged INR 10 as entry fees. The museum is closed on Mondays and national holidays. The Salar Jung Museum is open from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM daily except Mondays,
Museum Rules
The Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad is a treasure trove of the history and culture of India. There are many rules that one should observe while visiting the museum in order to make their experience as pleasant as possible. Some of them are as follows:
1. Visitors should carry the ticket while visiting the museum. It is mandatory to show the ticket to the security guards at all times.
2. One should wear decent clothes while visiting the museum. No shorts, slippers or sandals are allowed inside the complex of the museum.
3 . Visitors should not play music on their mobile phones and other gadgets inside the museum.
4. One can carry a camera only after getting special permission from the security guards at the museum.
5 . Visitors are advised to remain silent inside the museum complex.
6 . One should not wear any jewelry or other valuable objects during the visit to the museum.
7 . Visitors are advised not to bring any animals inside the museum as this act is strictly prohibited by the museum administration.
8 . One should not try to touch the objects on display inside the museum complex.
9 . Visitors should not talk loudly or disturb other visitors while inside the museum.
10 . Visitors should not indulge in any undesirable activities like smoking, chewing gum or eating sweets inside the museum.
