The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 05 and very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on May 06, 2024. Residents and authorities in these northeastern states are advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential risks associated with the anticipated downpour.
According to the IMD, isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging from 115.5 to 204.4 millimeters on May 05. The following day, May 06, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase further, with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall predicted in certain areas.
This forecast raises concerns of possible waterlogging, landslides, and flash floods in vulnerable regions. Given the significant rainfall predicted for the two consecutive days, residents must stay informed and prepared.
Authorities are urged to monitor the situation closely and take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the public. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecasted period and to stay indoors as much as possible.
It is essential to secure loose objects, clear drainage systems, and stock up on essential supplies to weather the inclement weather conditions. Furthermore, residents living in flood-prone areas are advised to have an emergency plan in place and to stay connected with local authorities for updates and assistance.
