Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

In a significant advancement for India’s energy industry, the nation’s coal output skyrocketed to 78.69 million metric tons (MT) (Provisional) in April 2024, marking a robust growth rate of 7.41% compared to the same period in the previous year, which amounted to 73.26 MT.

This uptrend was primarily driven by Coal India Limited (CIL), which achieved coal production of 61.78 MT (Provisional), marking a growth of 7.31% compared to April last year when it was 57.57 MT. Additionally, coal production by Captive/others reached 11.43 MT (Provisional), reflecting a notable growth rate of 12.99% from the previous year, which stood at 10.12 MT.

Simultaneously, India’s coal dispatches for April 2024 surged to 85.10 MT (Provisional), up by 6.07% compared to the same period last year when it was recorded at 80.23 MT. CIL played a significant role in this surge, dispatching 64.26 MT (Provisional) of coal, marking a growth of 3.18% compared to April last year when it was 62.28 MT. Moreover, coal dispatch by Captive/others recorded a remarkable growth rate of 26.90%, reaching 15.16 MT (Provisional) in April 2024, compared to 11.95 MT in the previous year.

These figures indicate a positive trajectory in India’s coal sector, with both production and dispatches showing substantial growth compared to the same period last year. The increased coal production and dispatches are crucial for meeting the energy demands of various sectors, driving economic growth, and ensuring energy security for the nation.
