India Inaugurates First Green Hydrogen Plant in Stainless Steel Sector

Union Minister for Steel and Civil Aviation, Sh. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, marked a historic moment on March 4, 2024, as he virtually inaugurated India’s first Green Hydrogen Plant in the Stainless Steel Sector at Jindal Stainless Limited, Hisar. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the esteemed presence of Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Sh. Nagendra Nath Sinha, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless Limited, Sh. Abhyuday Jindal, Founder of Hygenco, Sh. Amit Bansal, and other officials from the Ministry of Steel.

Highlighting India’s commitment to a green and sustainable future, Minister Scindia emphasized the nation’s role in contributing to global environmental goals, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He underscored India’s rich tradition of environmentalism, now revitalized through modern strategies, such as the Panchamrit and Mission LiFE initiatives, aimed at combating climate change and promoting eco-friendly lifestyles.

Minister Scindia also shed light on India’s advancements in the steel sector, transitioning from a net importer to a net exporter and aspiring to become the world’s largest producer of crude steel. He emphasized the significance of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in transforming the steel industry, aiming to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export.

The Minister commended Hygenco and Jindal Stainless for commissioning India’s first long-term off-take green hydrogen plant, aligning seamlessly with the government’s vision for a cleaner and sustainable future. He highlighted the employment opportunities and environmental benefits generated by such innovative projects, urging industry stakeholders to adopt clean technologies actively.

The Green Hydrogen Plant at Jindal Stainless Limited is a pioneering endeavor, aiming to reduce carbon emissions significantly and make substantial contributions to India’s carbon reduction goals. With state-of-the-art features like rooftop and floating solar, it represents a milestone in sustainable industrial practices.
