In the recently held elections for the 2024–25 biennium, India clinched its re-election to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, securing the highest tally among the Category A states with “the largest interest in international seaborne trade.” This esteemed category includes nations such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Expressing his satisfaction, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, credited the ministry’s dedicated efforts under PM Modi’s leadership. The overwhelming international support, reflected in the highest votes, underscores the government’s commitment to bolster India’s diverse contributions to global maritime operations. The IMO, as the foremost authority regulating the maritime industry, plays a pivotal role in supporting worldwide trade, transportation, and marine operations.

The Indian delegation, led by Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri T.K Ramachandaran, along with members including DG Shipping Shri Shyam Jagannathan, officers of DGS, and representatives from the High Commission of India in London, played a key role in securing the re-election. The council, functioning as the executive organ of IMO, oversees the organization’s work and assumes the assembly’s responsibilities between sessions.

In line with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 (MIV 2030), the nation aspires to appoint permanent representatives at IMO London, aiming to enhance its global maritime representation. The proposal to nominate at least two qualified candidates for the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Program at IMO aligns with India’s goal of fostering maritime expertise. The JPO Program, integral to the United Nations, provides young professionals with hands-on experience in international cooperation.

The Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 outlines ambitious goals for strengthening India’s global maritime presence. Key initiatives include the establishment of a dedicated IMO cell in India, the appointment of a permanent representative at IMO headquarters in London, and the implementation of the BIMSTEC Master Plan. As part of the broader Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 Action Plan, these initiatives aim to fortify India’s position in the global maritime landscape, ensuring the coordinated and timely execution of regional projects.

India’s re-election to the IMO Council marks a significant milestone, reaffirming its commitment to shaping the future of international maritime affairs and contributing to global trade and transportation.
