In a significant address following the virtual inauguration of the redeveloped Sullurupeta Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, emphasized the deep-rooted connection between the Indian Railways and the nation’s economic and cultural identity.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pemmasani declared, “The Indian Railways are not just a part of our economy—they are a part of our identity.” His remarks highlighted the unparalleled role the railways play in the everyday lives of millions and in the broader canvas of India’s development.
A Lifeline for the Nation
The Minister pointed out that the Indian Railways transports over two crore passengers every single day, serving as a lifeline for the country’s mobility and connectivity. It also stands as one of the largest employers in the world, underscoring its critical role in national livelihood and logistics.
“In today’s India, infrastructure represents more than just convenience—it embodies confidence,” Dr. Pemmasani emphasized, highlighting the importance of railway stations that are efficient, accessible, and reflect the spirit of national pride.
Railways at the Heart of India’s Growth Vision
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Indian Railways has undergone a remarkable transformation. Dr. Pemmasani praised the Prime Minister’s focused approach in making the railways a central pillar of India’s development journey.
He said, “His approach has been clear: transform railway infrastructure, enhance passenger experience, and integrate stations with India’s broader urban renewal.”
This holistic vision is encapsulated in the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a flagship initiative to modernize over 1,300 railway stations across India.
Sullurupeta: A Symbol of Progress and Strategic Importance
The redevelopment of Sullurupeta Railway Station, completed at a cost of ₹14.5 crore, stands as a key milestone under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Situated in the revered Tirupati district, the station holds dual strategic importance—serving both religious pilgrims and the scientific community, as it is the closest rail link to Sriharikota, India’s premier spaceport and launch site for national space missions.
Dr. Pemmasani emphasized the unique place that Sullurupeta holds on the Indian railway map and celebrated its transformation into a modern hub that reflects the aspirations of New India.
Unprecedented Investment in Andhra Pradesh’s Railway Infrastructure
Elaborating on the developments over the last 11 years, Dr. Pemmasani revealed that the budget allocation for railway projects in Andhra Pradesh had witnessed a tenfold increase, surging to ₹9,417 crore in 2025–26, compared to allocations between 2009 and 2014.
Key achievements in Andhra Pradesh’s railway infrastructure include:
- 414 kilometers of new railway lines added
- 1,217 kilometers of double lines completed
- 3,748 kilometers of electrified tracks
- 41 major projects sanctioned, amounting to a cumulative investment of ₹34,700 crore
A record 73 stations across Andhra Pradesh are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the Minister noted.
A New Era for Indian Railways
Dr. Pemmasani’s remarks underline a new chapter in Indian infrastructure where railways are more than just a mode of transport—they are a platform for national transformation. Through sustained investment, strategic leadership, and visionary schemes like Amrit Bharat, Indian Railways is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s urban and rural connectivity.
As India steams ahead on the tracks of modernization and growth, stations like Sullurupeta stand as testaments to the country’s resolve to create inclusive, efficient, and inspiring public spaces that reflect the strength and aspirations of its people.
