India’s First Handloom Hackathon Concludes at IIT Delhi

The first-ever Handloom Hackathon, held at IIT Delhi, showcased how India’s brightest minds are combining tradition with technology to transform the handloom sector through sustainable, market-ready innovations.

✨ Highlights:

  • 400+ participants, 250 teams, pan-India representation
  • Organized by Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles
  • Themes: Design innovation, digital market access, sustainability
  • Real-time weaver interactions for grounded solutions
  • Winning ideas will receive long-term government backing for real-world implementation.
  • Part of National Handloom Day 2025 celebrations

The landmark Handloom Hackathon, held for the first time at IIT Delhi’s Dogra Hall, concluded on a high note as over 400 participants from 250 top teams nationwide presented groundbreaking ideas to modernize India’s vibrant handloom sector. Organized by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, the event was a key highlight of National Handloom Day 2025.

Inaugurating the event, Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, praised the energy and creativity of participants, stating, “The young innovators have exceeded our expectations by delivering meaningful, actionable solutions for our handloom community.”

The event witnessed an overwhelming response, with 1,500+ initial applications pouring in from every corner of India—from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Silchar to Kutch. Participants included students from premier institutions like NIFTs and IIHTs, demonstrating a truly national innovation ecosystem in action.

The hackathon was powered by a unique collaboration between government, academia, and industry, with support from FITT-IIT Delhi, National Design Centre, TIDES Incubator, ThinkStartup, and the IIT Delhi Alumni Association.

Teams competed across three key themes:

  1. Design & Operations Innovation – including smart production tracking and ergonomic solutions
  2. Market Access & Digital Integration – focusing on authenticity verification and storytelling
  3. Sustainability & Environmental Impact – addressing eco-friendly dyeing, water conservation, and circular economy models

The two-day challenge unfolded in four progressive stages: Ideate, Research & Validate, Build, and Final Pitch. Teams interacted directly with handloom weavers, ensuring their solutions remained rooted in real-world challenges and aspirations.

Crucially, the hackathon wasn’t just about innovation—it focused on implementation. Winning solutions were selected for their real-world applicability, and the Ministry has committed to supporting their long-term deployment, ensuring that the ideas move from labs to looms.

Throughout the event, participants engaged with mentors, industry leaders, and domain experts, who evaluated the pitches for technical soundness and market potential.

As part of National Handloom Day 2025, the Handloom Hackathon represents a forward-looking blueprint for the sector—strengthening artisan livelihoods, enhancing digital reach, and embedding sustainability into India’s textile future. The winning innovations, announced at the closing ceremony, are set to become catalysts for a revitalized, modern, and globally competitive handloom industry.
