Union Minister of Steel Jyotiraditya M. Scindia & Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi today, signifying a significant step towards strengthening cooperation in the steel sector and addressing decarbonization challenges. The meeting emphasized the importance of pursuing a policy approach that considers the unique circumstances of each country’s steel industry while striving to achieve economic growth and a low-carbon transition.
India and Japan, being the world’s second and third-largest steel producers respectively, acknowledged their shared responsibility as co-benefit partners in the global steel industry. Both sides recognized the recent increase in investment activities by Japanese steel producers in India, which underlined the potential for further collaboration between the two nations’ public and private sectors, leading to the sustainable development of the global steel industry.
Central to their discussions was the shared commitment to achieving respective net-zero goals, recognizing the diverse pathways to decarbonizing the steel sector. Understanding the complexities involved, India and Japan pledged to continue their collaboration through the Steel Dialogue and other cooperation programs. The upcoming meeting scheduled for November 2023 will focus on exploring innovative technologies that enhance energy efficiency and facilitate the decarbonization of steel production.
The meeting emphasized the significance of public and private sector partnerships in driving effective solutions for reducing carbon emissions in the steel sector. Both countries reaffirmed their dedication to promoting sustainable growth while actively combating climate change, thereby setting an example for other steel-producing nations to follow.
This bilateral meeting marks a crucial milestone in India-Japan relations and sets the stage for further cooperation in tackling environmental challenges and advancing the steel industry’s sustainability.
